Life drawing 13.05.16. ‘D’ in oils.
I’m trying to make sure you have the feel of a real person in a real room. The stylisation happens in accidentally. With the range of hues, positioning of the figure and range of brushstrokes, this has normal, academic feel. There … Continue reading

Life drawing 06.05.16. ‘A’ The lady dancer in oils.
This week oil paint and paper met with a lot of non toxic turps substitute. The interaction was sometimes frustrating but gives these works a different feel than the usual acrylic marks. The model, ‘A’ is fantastic and has been … Continue reading

Self Portrait 40, 42, & 45.
The end product. Oil paint on canvas, painted wooden frame. This has been sent in to the Ruth Borchard self-portrait prize. The work 40, 42, & 45 was painted over the last 5 years, with a nod to Dorian Gray. … Continue reading

AB Smiles Sunny Sunday Magnolia.
The final work. A commission. The work at angles. The work seems to handle being played with. Here’s a harder version, more like an old master palette and blue period Picasso version. I still like this large sketch from life. … Continue reading

This is a portrait of a friend, sitting at my kitchen table with a glass of white wine lit by candlelight. What I’m trying to do with this painting is: 1. Make you feel like you are really there. The … Continue reading
Revising old artworks.
All these works are in a state of flux. Will they ever be truely finished? Not sure. A self portrait from real life. I like the idea of a constantly aging self portrait. Sort of not Dorian Grey / self … Continue reading

A new practice painting.
Taken from a very large life drawing. This was the first session. Let’s see where it goes. It’s quite spooky at the moment.
Painting progress
Here’s a perspective shot of a painting that’s around half way through at the moment. It’s of a mother, child and their dog in a wood, on a metre square canvas. It should be ready to present by Christmas. Now … Continue reading

T, A & L. Mum, Daughters’ kid & Daughter.
Here’s how the painting came to be. It’s squared up which is unusual for me. The compositon is from two different different photos heavily cropped and rotated -15˚. The palette was Zinc white, Colbalt blue (hue), Burnt Umber, Crimson Alizarin, … Continue reading

WinstonChurchill18061940
I think I’ve finished around 12.30 last night. There might be matt varnishing to do, framing (?), making the carpet look a little less grass like but this is pretty much it. I’ll photograph it properly as well. The title … Continue reading

Mr Ben could be you: from 1992
This is the inspiration for the MrBenBuStop painting. It’s wilder, messier, quicker and more daring than the recent one, but that might be because I was 22 at the time. The yellow paint was fabulously smelly as I remember. To … Continue reading

Winston 12 12 10
Italy is now twice the size. The figure has been placed in the room (shadows have been added). His bowtie is better. The back of his head is considerably smaller. He has my right hand. I’m still not sure about … Continue reading
Winston on Tuesday
He now has tea leaves and coffee mixed with the paint on his suit, if anyone has an old dried out cigar… chuck it over. His nose, mouth and eyelids need work. There could be a little door and some … Continue reading

Winston this weekend.
I’ve been able to devote a few hours to Winston this weekend and here is the result. He’s looking a bit grumpy and bored rather than defiant and full of history. Maybe I need a sleep. There are obviously … Continue reading

Winston is Blue
Here’s the first look the painting I’m working on for a friend of mine. Winston Churchill is a great subject; there’s a lot of raw material from which to work. It’s around life size. As you can see I need … Continue reading

Auntie Giles (please click on the image to make it larger)
I think this portrait of my great friend Auntie Giles the muscian is finished. Human hair, ground coffee (decaf), wood glue, old t-shirt, wax, champagne foil, oil paint, painters medium, household enamel and biro. Phew. He likes it. He made … Continue reading

A new ‘practice’ painting.
I wasn’t that bored. Or angry. If you sit still for that long and stare in a mirror you end up looking like this. Testing out a wet on wet layers technique.
