I started off drawing from the TV as usual but thought I’d try a version on the mac using photos of the cast as a reference. The strange timelesss noir feel of the programme is reflected in illustrative technique; like lots of sharp paper cut outs.
In this brilliant, fantastically acted drama:
The man in the hat (Antony Sher) is like the angel of death, the lady cop (Kierston Wareing) angrily looking on, the small psycho (Rafe Spall) irked by the size of ‘The Flower Man’ (Christopher Eccleston) trying to keep it all together, while out amnesic cop (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is lost in a case with a past he can’t remember and a bullet in his head. This bullet and some flowers were in an earlier version – but there was too much stuff going on.
I’ll scan in my pen sketches when I get the chance.

Love the portaits, but feel the type isn’t quite strong enough. I get where you’re coming from – with the fine monoline typeface/Shadow Line title, but it isn’t holding up against the quality of the images. Which are simple and beautiful. Nice one!
Well spotted. The type isn’t too fancy as I’d run out of time and had sOme real paid work to do. Time’s up!
